The 4th of July Canyon is a good car camping site that is easy to get to, as it is only about a 75 minute drive from Albuquerque. In the summer, it's a beautiful camping spot in a mixed forest. In the fall, it becomes spectacular, as the many maples turn a blazing red creating a visual delight. There are several miles of trails immediately in the campground, and many more miles of trails in the surrounding area. So, as a camping spot or as a day hike destination, it's a fun place to go. The downside is that it is a fairly popular site, and there will likely be quite a few other people around.
