San Pedro Parks Wilderness (Jemez)

Latitude/Longitude: 36.027167, -106.846848 Elevation: 9200 ft

I love the San Pedro Parks Wilderness. It is a great place to backpack.  It's high in elevation, resulting in wonderful summer temperatures, and there is LOTS of water; it's hard to go for more than a few miles without encountering some water.

And, whether good or bad (depends on your perspective), there isn't a lot of elevation change. The San Gregorio trailhead starts around 9200 ft, and I believe the highest point in the area is San Pedro Peak, which is only at 10,592 ft. One of the best things of all, though, is that there are tons of trails throughout the area. You can just show up at the trailhead, bring a map, and wander all over.

With all those trails, and with desirable destinations starting as soon as San Gregorio Reservoir (which is only perhaps 1 mile up the trail), and because the trailhead is only about 1.5-1.75 hrs from Albuquerque, this could be a nice day hike location, too. But, with the camping so wonderful, why wouldn't you stay overnight?

This website documents a great trip through the San Pedro Parks Wilderness, with excellent photos, and a few snapshots of the route they took on a topo map. Great site.

  2. We just went there again in mid-June. Gorgeous. More lush and more wild flowers than we had ever seen before. Great times.
